Leveraging Technology to Deliver Legal Services
Since 2020, the environment in which NLS operates has changed drastically due to a myriad of factors, especially the COVID-19 pandemic. Legal aid programs and private law firms alike, quickly pivoted to operate remotely. NLS’s transformation from in-person to a virtual legal practice was surprisingly swift.
Several factors enabled NLS’s rapid service delivery conversion. Years ago, NLS adopted an organizational commitment to expand access to justice by promoting technological innovations in legal services delivery and ongoing technology assessments and planning. These efforts enabled NLS to secure investments in technology over the years from various funders including the Hillman Family Foundations, the Eden Hall Foundation, the Forbes Funds, the Maurice Falk Fund, the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network (PLAN) and the Legal Services Corporation.
Technology in the legal practice is constantly evolving and NLS is always look for ways to increase efficiency and enhance service delivery. NLS is currently working with Arch Tech, LLC, a national IT consultant, to conduct a thorough assessment of our technology infrastructure and security audit as well as technical assistance in crafting NLS’s technology strategy and plan. Other recent technology advancements made to increase services and expand efficiencies include: website upgrades including the intergration of tools to improve accessibility for people with disabilities, development of a legal wellness tool, and the conversion to a cloud-based phone system and network.
The pandemic created enormous pressure for NLS and other legal aid organizations that provide free or low-cost legal representation. The demand for legal services has never been greater, we are grateful for the financial support of our contributors. NLS welcomes your ideas and involvement as we work to improve our technology capacities to better serve clients, increase efficiencies and improve volunteer/donor engagement.
