Hands On Learning for Law Students
Law students can advise and represent actual Neighborhood Legal Services clients as well as assist with document preparation and research.
Through both our Summer Intern Program and School Year externships, certified law students can provide representation to clients at court hearings. The summer program is a 10-week immersive program in housing law. After a week of substantive training, students will have their own caseload for which they can provide advice, negotiations, and representation at district justice and arbitration hearings. Why intern at NLS?
Interns receive substantive training and hands-on experience with clients unlike many other internship settings where students are only doing research and writing. They also have the opportunity to participate in community activities along with the legal experience.
Students currently:
- Provide thousands of hours of help to our clients under the direction of our attorneys on such legal issues as Protection From Abuse, landlord tenant, employment law, and bankruptcy
- Are introduced to the practice of poverty law through hands on experience.
